Come Here, Nervousness is an exhibition focusing on moments of tension, anxiety. Through twelve expressionistic compositions utilizing a bright palate that belie the usual discourse on darkness and conflict, these moments and situations of death, loss, madness, rejection, doubt, and failed relationships can be examined and reexamined. Come Here, Nervousness is an opportunity to experience the intensity of uneasiness and dread on new terms.
Come Here, Nervousness
With her obligatory dance, she alarms
us — with chatter and pokes
and pebbles loaded,
knives keeping our brain
in a sling
from her little brown kit, she pulls
out — seeds of sickness, demise
pills for dread and disease
lingering on loss, loneliness
in a jar
is our daily dose, a Kierkegaardian con
for the fear, the trembling in tasting
those ticks known as time
leading us like lust, anchor drop in our chest
a weight that quivers and shivers
and twitches and shakes
for the dying one staring — into empty mirror
Artist’s Statement:
“I am a self-taught artist who considers my paintings to primarily be movements in figurative forms of expressionism, moments of isolation transported in bright colors and blur. I am a “provincial” fellow from the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia in the United States who loves to explore other places and other times. I currently live and teach in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spend my summers in a land I have come to love deeply — the Philippines. I am also a writer whose poetry and short stories have been published in over a hundred literary magazines, and each one of my paintings is accompanied by a poem that shares its title and vision as a composite work. My first book of short stories, Fissures and Other Stories, is being published next month on Bottom Dog Press.”
