“Herstories” is a tapestry of female narratives retold visually in various techniques and styles. The all-women show chronicles the Filipino woman’s struggles as she assumes a multitude of oftentimes conflicting roles in society. Performing such roles, admittedly, is fraught with challenges as society’s structure is latched on to the patriarchal order.

The show collective is informed by images resonating the female body as the artist’s jouissance, and at the same time as the locus of the woman’s struggles. Such images are a minefield of narratives as women figures wrestle with certain conditions that somehow strengthen their resolve to assert their import in reimagining Philippine history.

Representation is central to the show’s critical turn, as it has always been a recurring issue in art production. Hopefully, “Herstories” would allow us to reflect more seriously on how women are represented in the visual arts. May it also serve as a platform for a continuing dialogue on discoursing women and gender relations. (jryapo)
