From the Ground Up

Even though they remain out of sight, foundation is vital and it is imperative to pay attention to them. Without a solid foundation it is impossible to build a structure with good support and strength. Choosing the right elements and methods are essential to create a foundation that will hold for a lifetime. These are the very core for Amos Malayao’s first solo exhibition entitled “SOLID GROUND”, the artist’s interest lies in the complex relationship between people and the structure of the land. In his works, he explores this relationship between emotional response and structure of care and repair.

Malayao implies the idea that in order to build something requires a plan, but in order to succeed requires more than a plan but rather a well-structured roadmap. Having been in the Manila art scene for more than a decade, Malayao’s eagerness to make a mark are fueled with love of his craft and desire for sustainability.

Solid Ground is the artist’s personal narrative of pushing the boundaries to create though the impossibilities. In 2017, Malayao’s family went through their darkest time including the loss of his older brother and faced economic difficulty. This led to the artist restructuring his priorities and redefining his goals which included personification of this solo exhibition.

His recent works are inspired from the sculptures of renaissance which gives the impression of security found in solid structures but also displays Malayao’s exceptional artistic skills. Personal stories are hidden inside each piece through symbolism and juxtaposition of elements. Malayao aims to narrate his personal stories of struggles and survival in order to evoke feelings, coping from loss, and a hopeful perspective.

Foundations are designed and built not to be visible, but they are felt. They are powerful, effective and hidden from sight. In our current culture where everything we experience is fragile and changeable – we seek solid ground, trying to maintain a foothold on reality. In this exhibition, there is more than the perception, it is what you felt after.
