Idyllic landscapes and smiling young maidens immediately come to mind when discussing Fernando Amorsolo, but little light has been shed on his works that depict historical figures and scenes. From the burning of the idols during the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the sewing of the Philippine flag, and most strikingly, scenes from the Second World War; Amorsolo was able to depict key historical moments in the country’s narrative in his characteristic style.
