BEAT! SOUND! PAINT!
A Live Painting Show with percussions
November 22, 2014 (Sat)
6PM-8PM

Japanese artists, Marie Ikura and Atsuko Yamagata in partnership with TIU Theater present an interesting visual and musical collaboration in BEAT! SOUND ! PAINT!, a live painting show with
percussions and contemporary – ethnic music from Japan and the Philippines.

Joining Ikura and Yamagata as they both perform and paint on stage are Kontra – GaPi Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino – Resident Ethnic Music and Dance Ensemble of the College of Arts and Letters of UP Diliman, Wadaiko (Japanese drum) player Kojiro, DJ Taiji Uemura and the Adinkra Lumads Djembe Community.

Visual arts and music always consistently meet in certain intersections and potential conspiracies which are synergistic moments that can evoke always interesting experiences. Intently with more dynamics and verve, the show aims to create alternative routes to experience music and visual art. Hopefully by interpreting music and movements into paintings with such intense emotional bent, audiences will be able to connect, feel and embrace the esthetic possibilities of juxtaposing painting- performance with distinct musical repertoire from both countries.

Ikura and Yamagata, while thoroughly engaged in their individual creative practices, are particularly inclined in the possibilities of intersecting their art with other creative disciplines through collaborations of this nature. Ikura actively does live art and she also creates murals and provides art for movie sets. She also makes wearable art, paintings on kimonos and other clothes. Meanwhile, Yamagata as a painter works heavily with acrylic, collage, and mixed media. In 2013, her recurring theme was the idea of “sibuyas (onion)”, which means like “what is revealed of oneself after peeling last layer of onion”. This year she is currently working on collages by using both construction paper and chiyogami.

Yamagata a native of Hokkaido, Japan is currently based in Manila while Ikura lives in Kanagawa but shuffles back and forth to the Philippines for art projects.

This is the third time that they will do a live-painting stage performance at TIU Theater. The first one was during the TIU Theater’s soft opening event “Live Painting Show” in May 2014 and was immediately followed by a similar performance during the “Artist Market”, Japan and Philippines in August 2014. Outside of TIU Theater, they have been collaborating in various venues like exhibition openings and in museums and galleries in Philippines, Japanese business parties in Manila, charity events for Yolanda in
Japan etc. To date they have been collaborated live-painting for more than ten times.

The venue, TIU Theater (formerly Louies THX) in Milelong Compound, corner Amorsolo and Dela Rosa Sts. has been an active venue for cultural events, film festivals, musical concerts and stage performances drawing attention to alternative entertainment, performing arts from the regions in a commitment the diverse cultures of the country. Likewise, it is also a theater school for urban poor children and a platform for aspiring filmmakers, entertainers and singers.
