Together with the cool and foggy weather that reminded him of London, it was the richness of the art and culture of the Cordillera region that attracted now National Artist Benedicto Cabrera or more popularly known as BenCab to take up residency in Baguio since 1985, after being away for 13 years. Baguio is an amalgam of different indigenous peoples of the Cordillera such as Ibaloi and Kankanaey and BenCab fuses raw emotion and spontaneous brushstrokes. In fact it is this merging of the traditional with the contemporary that ushered him to establish the Baguio Arts Guild with other artists based there in the 80s.

Epiphany for an artist not only comes when he has finally found his distinct visual style, it could also be the creative fruition of that long and arduous process of studying his purpose and experimentation; of being exposed and imbibing his heritage with the contemporariness in interpreting the sheer realities he evolves himself in.

Edmund Andrada, Joey Simsim and Dexter Simsim are among the third generation of contemporary artists from Benguet and they have step up the plate and continue the cause of the surreal and the sublime in this group exhibition Beyond the Precipice ongoing at the Galerie Anna.
