Curating Around Islands: Curatorial Development Program 2022

OPEN CALL FOR CURATORS!

Curating Around Islands: Curatorial Development Program 2022 is a free online Workshop that initiates conversations around curatorial work that is iterative and itinerant.

Inspired by the flexible modes of curating VIVA ExCon (Visayas Islands Visual Artists Exhibition and Conference) over the years, this edition of the Curatorial Development Workshop, organized by the Japan Foundation, Manila and the Philippine Contemporary Network, initiates conversations around curatorial work that is iterative and itinerant. In keeping with the spirit of the framework of VIVA ExCon, begun in 1990, curation is imagined to being invested in the spirited movement from shore to shore, between land and water, through tides and mangroves.

More specifically, this workshop is keen on two important dynamics: inter-local and multi-site. It is interested in a conception of a lively locality: how it deepens and projects, how it relates with plural sites of which it is a coordinate. This coordinated plurality proves to be a character of the curatorial method that this workshop seeks to reflect upon and put into motion. Between Visayas and Japan alone are a multitude of archipelagic articulations that can be traversed by carving space for dialogue between young and emerging creators from the two countries together.
