CREATING MULTI COLOR CURES

by Joanne Angelique Rebustillo
Seven years ago, I took my paintings to a few galleries, and I was told “You just paint pretty pictures.”

“Where is the depth… that strong emotion… anger, despair, hurt… that certain feeling that twists your heart in sorrow, joy or pain?” “You should paint with more conviction, something that stands for something like patriotism, revolution…” “I don’t sell pretty pictures. I sell blockbusters. That’s what defines the mediocre from the masters.”

For some time, I did try hard to pull the ugliness from my life and put it on my blank canvas. You want anger, despair, hurt, bleakness? Try my life. Anyone who knows me, knows how much I wade through them every day, in my childhood and in my current age.

But whenever I pick up my brush or pen and want to share my art…
I paint my pretty pictures.

Why? Because when told that ‘strong emotion’ sells, deep inside me, I equate it with HAPPY. Happiness in itself is a statement for me. My compulsion is to paint from a dreamer’s perspective, with a child’s ideals, to escape to a world of my own to regain my sanity.

“Eye See Hues” (ICU: Intensive Care Unit) is meant as a double entendre, as I use art to heal when negativity overwhelms me.

By working with watercolor, acrylics, inks, tiles and wires and using bold strokes and lines, I give the eyes a feast of colors. It soothes my soul and quiets my heart, in communicating through my art that there is hope, that dreams are still there, that wishes may come true, and that pain may subside. Most of all, it lessens the sharing of what’s bad and conveying more of what’s lacking in our world : the beauty and joy in every memory, situation, place and person.

And now, I bring my world for you to see and heal, too.

Joanne Angelique Venida Papa-Rebustillo completed a Fine Arts degree majoring in Advertising at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), and trained under the tutelage of Fernando Sena from a young age. She has exhibited her works in Manila Art 2015 and VMeme Art Project’s “Dance of Faith”, DTI Fairs, and in group exhibits such as “Babae Sino Ka 2018.” Women’s rights, body positivity, self-love and anti-bullying are prevalent themes in her work.

She self-published four adult coloring books featuring the intricate patterns of her signature free-flow tangle art. She conducts regular workshops in her studio – and also in places like the British School Manila – with her focus on new holistic arts for both traditional and tactile crafts (as she is also a wire and accessory designer).
