The University of the Philippines Vargas Museum, in cooperation with Art Underground, presents Marc Aran Reyes: Familiar Places, opening on 23 October, Wednesday, 6pm, at the 3F Galleries of the museum.

Mining the Jorge B. Vargas archives for inspiration, Marc Aran Reyes (b. 1990) unearths material from Jorge B. Vargas’ post-war confinement in Sugamo Prison and creates work to bridge it to the contemporary issue of isolation. Using materials used in domestic settings as visual metaphors, he casts parallels between the home and prison, alluding to freedom and constriction as a state of mind. Using old wood sourced from abandoned and demolished houses for an installation inspired by Jorge B. Vargas’s prison cell, Reyes contemplates history as accretion, and ties it to the function of museums and archives as a trove of data and privileged memory. An overarching theme of transcendence ties all the seemingly disparate ideas being explored.

Marc Aran Reyes graduated with a Fine Arts degree from the Far Eastern University in 2012. He has exhibited in group exhibitions and art fairs in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Familiar Places is his eighth solo exhibition.

Marc Aran Reyes: Familiar Places runs until 23 November, 2019.
