The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP), a trust of the Government, is an educational, scientific, and cultural institution that envisions a Filipino nation unified by a deep sense of pride in their common identity, cultural heritage, and natural patrimony. To be able to achieve its vision, the National Museum Philippine’s primary mission is to acquire, document, preserve, exhibit, and foster scholarly study and appreciation of works of art, specimens, and cultural and historical artifacts.

The present-day NMP traces its origins to the Museo Biblioteca de Filipinas, which was established through a royal decree on August 12, 1887. It was later adapted by the American colonial government to become the Insular Museum of Ethnology, Natural History, and Commerce on October 29, 1901. The agency had undergone several organizational restructurings and transfer of sites until it was officially given a permanent home at Rizal Park Complex in Manila by virtue of Republic Act No. 8492. In 2019, Republic Act No. 11333 provided for the further expansion and institutionalization of NMP. It now manages 17 regional, area and site museums, and satellite offices across the country, with three more upcoming museums in various regions that will be operational in the coming years.

The NMP Central Complex comprises three museums. The National Museum of Fine Arts is home to 29 galleries and hallway exhibitions featuring 19th-century Filipino masters, National Artists, leading modern painters, sculptors, and printmakers. Also on view are art loans from other government institutions, organizations, and individuals. The National Museum of Anthropology stages thecountry’s ethnographic, terrestrial, and underwater archeological heritage, narrating the story of the Philippines through prehistoric artifacts and indigenous material culture. The National Museum of Natural History houses 12 permanent galleries that exhibit the rich biological and geological diversity of the Philippines. It includes creatively curated displays of botanical, zoological, and geological specimens that represent our unique natural history.

The GSIS Museo [ng Sining] was established in April 1996 but last October 2012, GSIS turned over the management of the GSIS Art Collection to the National Museum (NM) located along P. Burgos St. Manila (near Manila City Hall). Around 100 pieces, majority of which were done by National Artists like Fernando Amorsolo, Botong Francisco, Vicente Manansala, HR Ocampo, Joya, Kiukok, Bencab, National Artist Elect — Federico Alcuaz and other known artists such as Diosdado Lorenzo, Jose Blanco, Juvenal Sanso, & Rodolfo Ragodon are currently on display at the 3rd level of the National Art Gallery, NM. Juan Luna’s “Parisian Life” is also entrusted to the management of National Museum.

GSIS retained the works of other artists as well as the winning entries of the Annual GSIS Art Competition. These pieces are now on display at the GSIS Art Gallery including the largest mural publicly on display done by Amorsolo entitled “History of Music.” The Museum still conducts its regular activities like exhibits for new or group of artists, lectures and seminars, special tours, concerts and other performances among others. On the other hand, GSIS as an institution celebrated its 75th anniversary last year and memorabilia items were put on display at the museum entrance hallway. These items are now redisplayed and re-exhibited at the lower gallery of the museum. The space allocated for these items is renamed the GSIS Gallery of Institutional Memory.

Museo ng GSIS also handles other artworks and items (antiques, decorative items, pieces of furniture, etc.) from foreclosed and important properties of GSIS such as Puerto Azul, Coconut Palace, and the Metropolitan Theater. Some of these items are also put on display.

DEREK TUMALA: TROPICAL CLIMATE FORENSICS

Tropical Climate Forensics draws inspiration from Derek Tumala’s residency at the Manila Observatory, one of the oldest meteorological observatories in South-east Asia, built by Jesuit fathers in 1865. Tumala’s research into the meteorological and seismographic archives, current data and future forecasts sheds light on shifting patterns of weather and climate in the Philippines and the region. Using the form of a diorama as a model, Tumala’s online project explores the climate crisis across the past, present and a speculative future. He creates a taxonomy specific to the Philippines as a tropical site, with biomes to represent his research into the climate crisis.

The project is part of the World Weather Network — a global coalition of 28 arts agencies around the world formed in response to the climate crisis.

Adamson University Art Gallery

Romualdez Street, Ermita, Manila

Open
Monday to Friday; 9AM to 5PM

Located at the left side of the Adamson University Theater, the Adamson University Art Gallery first opened last September 27, 2005. The gallery’s latest transformation is the handiwork of Arch. Sylvester Selio, faculty member of the College of Architecture, who was commissioned to design the makeover. From just being a part of the St. Theresa’s Auditorium and its surroundings, the gallery now invites a second look because of its
interesting Brutalist architecture that carries modernist and deconstructivist elements. The Brutalist design applied is particularly evident in the wavy texture of the lower facade, in the cubist-looking surface of the upper facade, in the triangular shapes carved or embossed on the boundary wall at the terrace and even on the slender grass boxes embedded in the terrace itself. The linear and angled character of the design is echoed in the two-floor interior, notably in the stair case, ceiling and glass panels. It was renovated and reopened last October 1, 2013. The art gallery has mounted several arts and photo exhibits and serves as holding area for special guests of the theater.

Since its establishment in 2012, the gallery has mounted visual art exhibitions that featured works of PWU SFAD alumni, students, and faculty; hosted exhibitions of visiting artists such as Anne Pigelow Kaplan (photographer) and Jade Hoyer (Book and printmaking artist); hosted artists talks of Angel Shaw (filmmaker), Kawayan De Guia (Installation artist), Gerry King (glass artist), Ramon Orlina (glass artist), and organized

The archipelagic nature of the Philippines, its strategic location as a crossroads in the maritime trade routes, and the large contribution of Filipino seafarers in the global seafaring industry necessitate a maritime-themed museum that will serve as a repository of maritime knowledge and history. Museo Maritimo is dedicated to Filipino seafarers and pays homage to their contribution to nation-building from the distant past to the present.

On 23 March 2012, Museo Maritimo had its grand launch at the Philippine Trade and Training Center, the first maritime-themed museum in the country, that showcases its long and rich maritime history and how it has developed through the centuries. Museo Maritimo is a project envisioned and initiated by the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies or AIMS, under the keen supervision and efforts of its President, Mrs. Arlene AbuidPaderanga, Ed. D., in collaboration with Hiniraya Cultural and Heritage Foundation
and its partner organization ICOM Philippines. Museo Maritimo utilizes imaginative exhibitions and displays to illustrate what the Philippine seafaring, training, and manning history is and who its leaders are.

Furthermore, it serves as a repository for valuable collections of marine art, ship models, and nautical artifacts. Museo Maritimo believes that museums are not only storehouses of history and knowledge, but should alsoserve as factories of knowledge. In realizing this objective, the museum promotes not only heritage awareness but also takes part in nation-building and knowledge generation by conducting quality research, conferences, seminars, and lectures that will make everyone conscious of the maritime past, present, and future.
