Art competition winners from the Southern region of the country converge with their latest works in “Southwind,” a presentation by Galerie Roberto. Opening reception is on March 13, 2017 at 6:30 pm.

Participating artists are: Gary Custodio, Arel Zambarano, Lester Amacio, Jeline Laporga, Allain Hablo, Marrz Caparang, Jeomel Mirabuena, Jason Delgado, Rommel Garde, Mark Nativo, Peter Fantinalgo, Darel Javier, Marlon Magbanua, Dennis “Sio” Montera, Sam Penaso, Jana Jumalon, Joe Geraldo, Harry Mark Gonzales, Tyrone Dave Espinoza, Jeanroll Ejar, Rodney Yap, Leonel Cervas, Jericho Vamenta.

Traditionally, art competitions are entry points for young artists aspiring for reward and recognition. Initiated by the Art Association of the Philippines after the war, under the leadership of the late Purita Kalaw Ledesma, the annual competition was instrumental in discovering the talents of Filipino artists, many of them now proclaimed National Artists.

Inspired by this pioneering advocacy, several institutions and corporations have followed suit and launched their own sponsored national art contests. To their credit and the gratitude of succeeding generations of young artists, these competitions have lasted through the decades, generating greater awareness and appreciation from the public. No doubt the development of Philippine contemporary art has been spurred by art competitions, which brought to public attention the most noteworthy artists of the time.
