Sentro Rizal London of the Philippine Embassy in London, in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), and Project Saysay, presents To Retrieve What Has Been Lost: Jose Rizal as Historian–a riveting exhibition on one man’s journey to retell the history of an entire nation.

——

Ten years after the brutal execution of Filipino priests Mariano Gomez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, Filipino reformist Jose Rizal travelled to Europe not only to pursue higher education but to exhume the long-buried history of the Philippine and the Filipino people. After arriving in London in 1888, Rizal spent the rest of his days in the British Library poring over Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas (Events in the Philippine Islands) and other books that opened his mind about the country he calls home. Throughout his stay in Europe, the words of Father Burgos echoed in his heart and mind: Being educated means making a conscious effort to deepen one’s understanding and appreciation one’s own history and culture.
