“Unfinished Paintings”

Unfinished paintings possess an appeal that is different yet sometimes equal or greater than a completed artwork.

Several unfinished artworks by outstanding artists have been celebrated and admired throughout history, prompting artists and non-artists alike to ponder on the reasons for their appeal.

One of the main reasons is that an unfinished artwork reveals or offers a glimpse into the artist’s conceptual and technical process, providing an added dimension in experiencing the work of art.

There is also be a voyeuristic aspect to it, like seeing the first drafts of a song or a poem, or an actor’s face before it is fully made up.

Since the preliminary stages of a painting is seldom intended to be seen, they may contain unpursued ideas, “mistakes”, hesitations, contradictions or a daring which is lost or restrained in the completed work.

There is also the thrill of seeing something yet to be fully formed, or an inkling into what is to come. There is an openness that is not often seen in a “completed work”, which sometimes works as an invitation to the viewer to complete the work in his or her imagination.

Artists from different eras have explored the aesthetics of the “unfinished”. This exhibition aims to pursue that vein and showcase works that build upon the unique qualities, as well as the concept, of the “unfinished” artwork. ●
