Bustling scenes of yesteryears draw nostalgia in multi-colored impasto in Christian Regis’ Gunita.

While painting sceneries of everyday life in the capital is nothing new for the artist, Regis depicts his latest works as stamps, alluding to how Filipinos keep their identity wherever they go: ever-smiling, always proud.

In Viajeng Pa Avenida (Tramvia at Jeepney), the cacophony of jeepneys honking, people greeting and Manila breathing takes the visual form on canvas through loud colors as festive as the scenery. Meanwhile, Viajeros (Jeepney Pasada) shows Regis’ familiar subject of three jeepneys reimagined in brighter life with more pronounced movement.

It can be surmised that Regis reminds us that one can take a Filipino out of the Philippines, but never the Filipino out of the Filipino.
