Pilipinas: Pilipino
|
“Pilipinas: Pilipino” šµš featuring works by Juanito Torres and up and coming modern and contemporary artists at Opus Mall.
What does it mean to be Pilipino in a nation called Pilipinas? In a country fractured and fused by colonizers, diaspora, memory, and myth, Pilipinas: Pilipino attempts to answer this questionānot with neat definitions, but with brushstrokes, textures, and the embodied truth of image.
This group exhibition, anchored by the works of Juanito Torres and other major artists such as, Vic Bachoco, Aljo Pingol, James Gabito, Jerry Morada, Eric Masangkay, and Richard Arimado among others, gather kindred visual voices whose practices revolve around the complexities of Filipino identity. Torres, known for his meticulously rendered allegorical paintings, confronts the nation with its own reflectionsāat times mirthful, sometimes abrupt but, always urgent. His canvases depict historical and contemporary figures in theatrical tableaux, where the line between satire and sincerity blurs. In his world, kasaysayan becomes both spectacle and scripture, unfolding like a komedya on the brink of revelation.
“Pilipinas: Pilipino” is both a question and a chorusāa visual invocation of who we have been, who we are, and who we dare to be. In witnessing these works, we are invited not only to see, but to recognizeāourselves, each other, and the unfinished story of this archipelago we call home.
