INTRAMUROS RISING 2: Intramuros set to host Manila-wide indie-music fest in December

By: Kenno S. Nishioka

The team behind Intramuros Rising, the first-ever indie music festival in Intramuros, is back with the second instalment of the uprising: #IntramurosRising2: A December to Remember.

Four months after the game-changing #IntramurosRising One, Ilustrados is back to stage another uprising inside the Walled City on December 13, 2014.

Falling in love with Intramuros

The feedback from first instalment of the music festival was overwhelming. Days after the successful #IntramurosRising, the Intramuros Administration immediately asked when will be the follow-up event. Festival-goers were eager for the announcements of the next one. Manila-based tour guide Carlos Celdran was also proud of the groundbreaking achievement of the Ilustrados behind #IntramurosRising. Reviews from online media partners were also overwhelming.

“We didn’t prepare ourselves for that love we received,” said Ilustrados Supremo, Jeremy Lopez. “What made IR1 special is because we didn’t expect it to be that amazing.”

Intramuros Rising 1 was met with strong rain mid-festival. However, people stayed to tough out the rain so they could watch and finish the festival.

Lopez says that because of all the overwhelming support and praise, “there’s no other thing to do but to strike whilst the iron is hot.” And thus, the second installment of the indie-music festival is set to happen in December, four months after the first uprising.

Why so soon, though? It’s because the ILUSTRADOS have fallen completely head-over-heels with Intramuros. “It’s our way of giving Intramuros a wedding ring kahit kakasabi niya pa lang ng I love you samin.

What’s new in the Uprising?

Aside from Intramuros-based bands, the second instalment of the music festival will feature Manila-based bands from nearby universities. According to Lopez, ILUSTRADOS invited Manila-based bands to remind everyone that Intramuros is “just a ride away”.

INTRAMUROS RISING 2 will feature guest electro-pop band Three.!, soul and RnB band Jensen & The Flips, and indie rock band Cheats. Headlining the guest bands is NU107 In The Raw Award recipient Flying Ipis!

Headlining the 11 Manila and Intramuros bands are Not Another Boy Band, signed to Terno Recordings, hailing from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Kontra Tiempo, and Nameless Heroes from Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT).

Joining performers from Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU), MIT, PLM, and Colegio de San Juan de Letran are bands from Manila-based universities like University of Santo Tomas (UST), De La Salle University (DLSU), DLSU-College of Saint Benilde (DLSU-CSB), Adamson University (ADU), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), University of the East (UE), and Far Eastern University (FEU). CSJL joins the uprising through punk bandThere’s ERA!

On top of that, prepare your hearts to be ripped out from your chests as spoken word poetry artists from Manila-based poetry group Words Anonymous dish out their original heart-wrenching spoken word pieces in between sets.

Food and alcohol concessionaires will be present in the venue to provide food for hungry mouths and booze for weary hearts.

#EQUALITY

Set a week before Intramuros Rising 2 is Pride March, an event aimed to fight for LGBT rights and equality. Intramuros Rising Two keeps the pride march fever alive in the festival by pushing for equality.

ILUSTRADOS chose to headline female-fronted band Flying Ipis as an ode to female power. According to Lopez, a plethora of female-fronted bands are in the line-up “to remind people that rock and roll is not just for men.”

ILUSTRADOS also chose to include Manila-based bands to give an equal shot to all college bands in the Manila area. Everyone is welcome to join the uprising!

Ilustrados aims to double the audience turnout from the previous instalment. “We hope once again that people will give Intramuros a chance. We will still continue doing this until Intramuros becomes the new venue in celebrating OPM and the arts!” said Lopez as a final word to everyone.
