In More | Less, Julieanne Ng shares her ruminations on our shared reality of living in an age of infocracy, where a new form of power dependent on artificial intelligence, data, and algorithm rises. This facet relates closely to the process and material aspect of her works, activating yet another dimension, our spiritual nature.

Utilizing fax paper, a ubiquitous object in her home, the artist employs its fundamental purpose–as a message-bearing surface– to be the very ground of her impressions. Symbolically, it mirrors the deluge of information inundating our senses demanding attention. The serrated pattern of the sheets imitates frequencies. Nobody is safe from the noise. More and more, we become technological bodies moving according to a system and algorithm of the binary.

Yet, Ng also invokes our capacity for transcendence. By harnessing incense sticks as her primary medium for mark making, she adds a vital detail in her process. Burning evidently subtracts miniscule blotches from the fax sheet. In this process of reduction, a new dimension in her works comes to surface. This is activated by light collaborating with the glass enclosing the work, a deliberate design by the artist. In this interaction, shadows form on the wall, echoing the metaphysical. Burnt nodes shift to dazzling speckles. Their way of existing is changed simultaneously.
